Shibori

Shibori is a Japanese term for a resist-dye technique that involves binding, folding, wrapping, clamping, stitching, and shaping threads or yardage. After manipulating the fabric in this way it is dipped, soaked or painted with dyes. These processes may be repeated many times on one piece of fabric to build more complicated  patterns and subtle colors.

Water, air and gravity push and pull the pigments through the bound cloth. I pour the color and let it seep. In this process the fabric records my hand and larger physical forces in the universe working together. The pattern is a dance between manipulation and letting go.

As the dyes settle and bond with the fibers a surface is revealed. Rippling over sand, pooling around rocks - the cloth remembers that place in time.
